Digimon Curious Facts #01: Taichi’s name

rainbow09:

Post #01 of the “Digimon Curious Facts” series I’ll start sharing starting today. Let’s have some fun and take a look at Yagami Taichi’s name to see what it actually means in the original japanese version~!

Yagami Taichi

» Ya (や): Eight

» Gami/Kami (がみ/かみ): God

» Ta (た): A lot, Great

» Ichi (いち): One, The number one, in Japan it is traditionally believed male people with “-ichi” in their names are strong and powerfull natural leaders.

Taichi’s name actually means “The Great One of the Eight Gods”. Which is funny in many different ways: the number of Chosen Children is actually eight; the crest of Courage has the shape of a Sun that has eight surrounding triangles (Hikari’s star shaped crest also has eight rays of light).

Most of the main Gods of the ancient mythos are symbolized by the Sun. Sun generates life and it is the center of the solar system, it is the force orienting the orbit of other planets. Gods like Ra are usually pictured like “the father” of the other minor Gods.

Now, the funny fact is the translation of “Kami” to “God” was never completely accurate. The meaning of “Kami” was distorted even to the Japanese because of ocidental religious influences. Yet, its original meaning is far from being the same the words “god” or “God” meant to represent to western people.

The right translation of “kami” is SPIRIT. Please note the idiogram of “kami” is 神. As you probably know, all kanji have a chinese origin. In China you read this kanji like “shen”, which actually means “spirit”, “soul”, “mind”, “supernatural being”. This kanji is used to define one of the Three Jewels of the Tao.

Ever wondered how Gennai realized there was an eighth child? Maybe… just maybe… this may be your clue.
